This Past Saturday, July 29th, Cheryl and I sailed Yuletide off to our new mooring in Lake Tashmoo!
We left the mooring in Fairhaven at 11:30, and I was worried about too little wind to make good time.
That was not a problem. By the time we cleared West Island we were in 15 knots of wind, and abnormally steep seas. We were clipping along at 6.5 knots, and were projected to get to Woods Hole way too early for a favorable passage, so I dropped the main and we sailed under genny alone. We were still doing over 5 knots, and were across the bay by 1:30. There were a couple of very steep waves that really put Yuletide on her side, I had not seen waves like this before. Unfortunately the wave action caused the kerosene lamps to rub against the cabin bulkhead and messed up the varnish work...another winter project.

We went through the hole with favorable tides, and posed as all the people on the Katama took photos of us. This was the first time that we went through flying sails, but the seas were flat calm, and in spite of a flotilla of vessels behind us, we had clear steerage to get through.

Once through the current grabbed us and started pushing us down to Vineyard Haven. Once we crossed Middle Ground I powered up the Yamaha, and we worked our way back up to Tashmoo. The trip into the harbor was a delight, and we found our mooring right off! Our own little piece of the Vineyard. Charlie and Linda were right behind us in Black Magic, I rowed over to where they were anchored and we visited a while.
Thenext morning it was coffee, blueberry muffins and a swim. We loafed all day, and at 4:20 pushed off for shore in Scrooge, the little dignhy. We were in town by 5:00. Enough time to sit for a short while, have a smoothie, and then head for the ferry. A short but great weekend. I am really pleased we have a mooring in tashmoo, such a beautiful spot.
